Roofing Poplar

Poplar has some of the most distinctive roofs in east London and some of the most misdiagnosed. E14 runs from the Lansbury Estate, built for the 1951 Festival of Britain, through Goldfinger’s Balfron Tower to the Victorian terraces around Chrisp Street and the newer blocks pushing out from Canary Wharf. That mix matters, because a leak on a post-war concrete-framed block behaves nothing like a leak on a Victorian terrace. On the estates it is usually the asphalt covering, the upstands or a failed rainwater outlet, and the water travels a long way before it appears. On the terraces it is slipped slates, a hidden valley gutter, or the shared chimney stack. Guessing costs money; getting on the roof and looking does not.
